Grandmother attempts to re-create the Italian Job

Grandmother Joan Gibbons, 74, failed to spot a vehicle ramp leading out of the car park and drove her Rover 216 up a pedestrian exit instead.

Ms Gibbons had just attended an aerobics class. However, it later transpired that she had been drinking before and after the aerobics session, and was drunk by the time she left. She then attempted to drive home.

In a scene reminiscent of the Italian Job, Ms Gibbons attempted to drive up a set of steps but unlike the 1969 film, the car got stuck at the top of the steps.

Emergency services were called to the scene and Ms Gibbons was arrested.

Ms Gibbons was breath-tested at the scene by police and returned a positive specimen. However, she refused to give another sample at Cambridge Police Station later that night.

Ms Gibbons pleaded guilty to failing to provide a breath sample without reasonable cause at Cambridge Magistrates' Court on Tuesday. She was banned from driving for 18 months, fined £350 and ordered to pay £60 in costs and £15 in a victim surcharge.

Ms Gibbons solicitor stated that she felt "shame" and "horror" at her actions and the damage they had caused. "She had been drinking as she was still suffering from the death of her brother in May after a six-month battle with cancer.
