Young driver education
Local officers and members of Safer Roads Humber spent two evenings pulling over young motorists to check over their vehicles, offer advice and prosecute when necessary. As a result, a number of drivers between the age of 17 to 25 felt the full force of the law. Two received fixed penalty notices for speeding, a summons was issued for a defective moped, one for a driver failing to wear a seat belt, one for careless driving, and a fixed penalty notice for driving while using a mobile phone.
Some were given the chance to attend a seminar for speeding and using a mobile, while others were given verbal warnings to check their speed, having tinted windows and other road traffic offences. Sergeant Pete Rogers, of Pocklington police, said "We are very pleased with the results".
The idea was to give drivers an opportunity to attend a seminar or face prosecution for summary offences."We wanted to educate as much as anything else, and this is a good initiative. It's something we do quarterly with safety being the key feature.
"This scheme is intended to promote road safety amongst an age group that is statistically involved in a larger proportion of accidents than others."
