Mobile phone ban snubbed

TOUGHER penalties for using mobile phones while driving have had hardly any effect, a survey has found.

Ninety-three per cent of drivers polled said they had seen someone using a handheld mobile at the wheel in the previous week.

And 36 per cent told What Car? magazine they continued to use a mobile themselves - just six per cent down on the figure recorded in 2005.

Culprits face a pounds 60 fine plus three points on their licence. But What Car's Steve Fowler said: "The message is not getting through."
