New research has revealed that a worrying proportion of drivers are confused over their legal responsibilities involved with running a car.
A study conducted by tyre specialist Kwik-Fit has shown that one in ten drivers believe that ensuring their car has a valid MOT certificate was optional, and not a legal requirement for cars over three years old.
A similar proportion also believed that holding appropriate insurance cover was non-compulsory, and ten per cent said the same about displaying an in-date tax disc.
While this is a worrying statistic, some drivers also believe that the regulations are stricter than they actually are. The study also revealed that one in five drivers believe that taking their car in for an annual service is a legal requirement. 46% also incorrectly thought the law required them to carry a spare tyre at all times, and 18% thought the same about carrying an emergency warning triangle.
The research highlighted that the unawareness towards motoring regulations is most prevalent amongst young drivers aged between 18 and 24. In particular, there is confusion as to what is actually tested during an MOT, with a large proportion of motorists (40%) expecting their car’s oil and battery to be inspected.
5% of drivers surveyed also believed an MOT test would inspect a car’s interior cleanliness.

“This widespread confusion amongst motorists is alarming and raises real concerns over driver safety and compliance with the law. It’s vital that car owners don’t rely entirely on an MOT test for vehicle maintenance, as servicing is a fundamental part of maintaining both the safety and value of a vehicle, even though it isn’t a legal requirement. Our advice to motorists is to make sure they get the basics right, which include insurance, MOT, servicing and tax, as these are essential for keeping a vehicle safe and legal.”
